The Royal Ulster Rifles were formed in 1921 from the Royal Irish Rifles, and with battle honours such as the Somme going before them, it was clear that this new Irish regiment was to become something special. And indeed in the second war to befall the world between 1939 and 1945, the Rifles were to gain the honour as the only regiment to have battalions both landinding on D-Day in the air (1st Battalion) and also on the beaches (2nd Battalion).
It is this distinguished Regiment which we aim to keep alive in the form of our Living History Group. In 1968 the Royal Ulster Rifles was amalgamated into the newly formed Royal Irish Rangers, and later in 1992 further amalgamation into the Royal Irish Regiment took place. More recently in 2005 the Royal Irish Regiment was downsized to one remaining Battalion (1st General Service Battalion), who in the keeping are part of 16 Air Assault Brigade; the modern equivalent of the Airlanding Brigades of WW2.
Based in Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, we are a true representation of this infamous Irish regiment. We are currently at section strength with around 8 members, and are always seeking new members. So if you like what you see and have a keen interest in military history and militaria, get in touch and we will soon be in touch. |
